Haile Selassie I - Teachings

The Oldest Books have been kept by Ethiopia only

“Indeed, our copyists in the first centuries have translated into ethiopian language several works produced in the mediterranean world. Copy by copy, these works have come down to us today, and it happens that the original has disappeared since long time, and only our humble translation in our old language remains, copied by our monks and scholars. In this way, the oldest text of the Apocalypse of Peter has been found within the collection of the National Library of Paris. Every day, just to speak about the collections in Europe, sages of all nationalities descover texts of the highest interest.”

The Main Ethiopian Title for God – Egziabhier እግዚአብሔር.

Generally, throughout the Ge’ez Bible God is called with His main title of authority: EGZIABHIER እግዚአብሔር.
“Egziabhier” is composed of 7 Letters and 3 Words.
The 7 letters are the 7 spirits of God, as it is written in Revelation (4,5): “And out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thunderings and voices: and there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God.” They are also the seven days of the Creation above which He is Lord.
The 3 Words are the 3 persons of the Trinity:
Egzie እግዚእ —- Lord —- The Son
Ab አብ —- Father —- The Father
Bhier ብሔር —- Province —- The Holy Spirit
Therefore, we have a special extension of the title of “Lord” (Egzie) into “Lord Father of The Province”, i.e. the Supreme Authority over Creation.

The Book of Henok

According to Ethiopian Tradition, in the beginning of humanity there was no written word, and the first prophet and father, Adam the Ethiopian, gave his prophetical teaching orally only, without writing any book.
The first to receive the gift of Scripture and the knowledge of the Letters, and therefore to be the first scribe ever, was Henok the Ethiopian, heir of Adam the Ethiopian as sovereign of the earth, that came through the 7th generation of men.
The Book of Enoch is the first form of literature that has been manifested among human beings, and chrologically it is the first Book of The Ethiopian Bible. In fact, before the books of Moses, two scriptures were given to Mankind: the Book of Enok and the Book of Yob, son of Esaw.
In Jubilees 4:16-18 it is written about Enok:
“he called his name Enoch. And he was the first among men that are born on earth who learnt writing and knowledge and wisdom (…) And he was the first to write a testimony.”
Therefore, according to the Ethiopian Tradition, the Bible, i.e. the Word of the God, constitutes the first Book of Humanity, pre-dating any other human book, Egyptian or whatever. That’s why Emperor Haile Selassie I stated:
“We regard the Bible above all other books”
The Book of Enoch has been excluded by the biblical canon of all the Christian Churches of the earth, except the Ethiopian Orthodox. The integral text of the book is kept in Ethiopic Ge’ez only. We know that he was considered as canonical by many important apostolic fathers of Church, even latin ones (like Tertullian, that wrote a specific apologia about it), and it is explicitly mentioned and quoted by the Apostle Jude (1,14-15) – brother of the Lord as son of Joseph from his previous marriage – like a part of the Bible he knew and recognized at that time:
“And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, ‘Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints, To execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him.'”
This passage was literally taken from Enoch 1:9. Indeed, the book of Enok is quoted several other times in the Gospels and in the words of the Apostles, and it is the main and oldest apocalictic reference of the Revelation of John about the “millennium” of the royal kingdom of the Messiah upon earth, described in Revelation chapter 20. With the romanization of faith and the politically motivated refusal of the doctrine of millenarism (that was considered dangerous for the stability of Roman kingdoms), the book of Henok suddenly disappeared, like the prophet himself, about whom it is written: “By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found” (Hebrews 11, 5).
The presence of this Book within the Ethiopian Canon declares the Ethiopian Bible as the only complete version of the Bible, and also the oldest. On the contrary, the absence of the first book of the Bible in any other biblical tradition proclaims it guilty, as it is written:
“And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.” (Revelation 22,19)
Enoch was taken by God and translated into heaven, to see the ark-typical ark-anes by which Egziabhier created everything, i.e. the Letters. He therefore learned the Science of the Ladders ( ሰዋስው Sewas(e)w ), as we call the vocabulary Book of the Ladders. It is the same concept of the scales for musical theory, like a tool to go up and down in expression and declension of semantics.
Henok was the son of the patriarch Yared, whose name means “comes down”, from the ge’ez verb “Werede” ወረደ. As it is written in Jubilees 4,14:
“and he called his name Jared; for in his days the angels of the Lord descended on the earth, those who are named the Watchers”.
The Book of Enoch explains the backstory of the deluge, when the Vigilant Angels came down upon the earth and taught secret magic knowledges to the people, that went crazy and corrupted their customs. The Vigilants also took human women and had sex with them, procreating the monstrous forbidden hybrid of the Giants, therefore forcing Egziabhier to exterminate everyone except 8 souls, the family of Noah, grandson of Henok.
In a time when the rebellious angels were to teach magical and hidden arts to the immature mankind, because of His Holiness Henok has received the secrets of the Supreme Art of Word, that he knew in the fullness of its states: Thought, Spoken, Written. Through this Original Creative Art, Egziabhier created the world; through this Ultimate Martial Art, Egziabhier will destroy the world.
The existence of the Book of Enoch, that was Ethiopian in race like the first man, only among the Ethiopians, only in Ethiopian language, confirms that the original language of Adam, spoken until the Tower of Babylon, was ethiopian, and only through Ethiopian Tradition we can acquire that original knowledge, as it written:
“For then will I turn to the people a pure language, that they may all call upon the name of the Lord, to serve him with one consent. From beyond the rivers of Ethiopia my suppliants, even the daughter of my dispersed, shall bring mine offering.” (Zephenya 3,9)
Henok is also known by the Egyptian culture as “Tut” the first scribe, having the shape of an Ibis, because of his long peak like a pen. The muslim people recognize him as Hanuk or Idrissa. Idrissa recalls the name by which He is known among the Greek, “Hermes TRISmegistus” (Thrice Great).

Ethiopian Wise Kidane Welde Keflie Ge’ez-Amharic Dictionary – 1955

From a very important Ge’ez-Amharic dictionary, printed under the imperial government in Ethiopia, in 1955, and written by Aleqa Kidane Weld Keflie. At the beginning of the book we find the picture of the King with a short Ge’ez composition:
ቀዳማዊ፡ሐፄ፡ኀይለ፡ሥላሴ፡
ንጉሠ፡ነገሥት፡ዘኢትዮጵያ፡
ኢይፈቅድ፡ይንግርዎ፡
ግእዞ፡ለሰብእ፡ግእዝ፡
እስመ፡ለሊሁ፡የአምሮ።
Qedamawi Hadziè Hayle Selassie
N(e)guse Negest ZeItyoppya
Iyfeq(e)d Yn(e)g(e)rwo
G(e)(e)zo LeSeb(e) G(e)(e)z
(E)sme Lelihu Yeamro ::
His Majesty Qedamawi Hayle Selassie
King of Kings of Ethiopia
Doesn’t want that one would tell Him
the Coscience of Men Ge’ez
For He Himself knows it ::
It is a literal adaptation from the Ge’ez Bible, from the Gospel of John 2:25 speaking about Christ:
ኢይፈቅድ፡ይንግርዎ፡ግዕዞ፡ለሰብእ፡እስመ፡ለሊሁ፡ያአምሮ፡ለሰብእ።
Iyfeqd Yngrwo G(e)(e)’zo LeSeb(e) (E)sme Lelihu Yaamro LeSeb(e) ::
which King James Version translates in this way:
“And He needed not that any should testify of man: for He knew what was in man.”
He knows the conscience of man (that is another meaning of Ge’ez, like the word used for the language) and no one shall educate HIM in this respect. By this statement, the ethiopian scholar is attributing to His Majesty the same supreme wisdom of Christ.

The First Element Created – Fire እሳት

Ethiopian Tradition, especially in certain ge’ez books like Sene Fetret and Aximaros, explain us that in the beginning, Egziabhier created before any other thing the 4 elements, by which He would constitute the substance of all His creatures. The are likened to the 4 directions and the first four letters of Ge’ez Alphabet, composing the word “A-BU-GI-DA”. The A-B-C-D we could say, the basic compass of Creation.
Hold on the Torch of Wisdom, His Majesty speaks about. The first creational element, for God as for man, is Fire, what we call in Holy Language (E)ssat እሳት. To create and produce anything, we firstly need a Fire to warm and protect, to cook food as to alterate, mould and manipulate matter. Similarly, the fire of the Sun is the primary energetic source of our life, and that’s why it was worshiped in ancient paganism. In Nyabinghi ritual, we call the central holy fire Fyah-Key, to express that same mystery.
The primacy of fire is manifested by the first letter of its word, that is an Alief እ (E), the first letter of Abughida Alphabeth, whose meaning is 1, and representing the I of God, and the same human image that was shaped in His Likeness. Jah revealed Himself in flames of fire into the eyes of Moses (Exodus 3) and within the fire we can sight the image of God and man. The fire represents the predominant power of the Coscience of God that thought and created all things. That’s why humans are called B(e)(e)si/B(e)(e)sit ብእሲ/ብእሲት Man/Woman from the same root of (E)ssat እሳት, for among the earthly creatures, humans are the only one to have a conscious spirit made of fire, in the image of God.
The second letter of the word is Son ሳ “Sa”, depicted like a candle, meaning physical sound of exalation of fire, its gas-like untangible nature, the burning incense of the temple to glorify God.
The third and last letter of the word is Taw ት “T”, depicted like a cross, meaning the burned wooden substance and its passivity, and spelling the natural crackle of fire.
The ge’ez number for 1 ፩ is basically a flame of fire, geometrically conceived as the idea of center.
The abode of God, the seventh heaven, the so-called Aryam, is made of Fire. Together with “Wind”, it is the main element of the heavenly things, including angels and human spirits. That’s why both Fire and Wind naturally go upward.
Fire is untangible like wind, but differently from wind, it is also visible. So, being untangible but visible, it also reveals its unique power of mediation between the worlds as between the elements. Similarly, it produces carbonized black substance while generating light.
Fire is generally associated to color red/black, that is also the first color, the beginning of the natural spectrum of light.
As it was in the beginning, so shall it be in the end, so everything comes to being from fire, and everything shall be destroyed in the end by a judgement of fire.

Jah Mother Tongue is Ethiopian

It is surely true that “however old the version may be, in whatever language it may be written, the Word remains one and the same. It transcends all boundaries of empires and all conceptions of race. It is eternal.” His Majesty has taught about the power of the Word of God to communicate its spiritual message of salvation beyond any human or historical corruption or falsification. In this perspective, we can use and read any possible version or language of the Bible and find truth for ourselves.
Yet, the King also told us that “the Holy Book should not be cut into portions“, and we have to obey the totality of the precepts – not only one – and watch both sides of each question.
In 1936, from the rostrum of Geneva, before the League of Nations, His Majesty said in french, his first teaching to the rebellious nations:
“Je prie l’Assemblée de M’excuser si Je ne M’exprime pas in français comme Je l’aurais voulu. “
“I pray the Assembly to forgive Me, If I do not express myself in french, as I would like.”
And after:
“Je dirai mieux toute Ma pensée, avec toute la force de Mon esprit et de Mon coeur, en parlant en langue amharique.”
“I would say better my thought, by all the strength of my spirit and heart, speaking in amharic language.”
When He speaks foreign languages, the power of His expression is not full. He speaks the fullness through ethiopian language only. Foreign translation is just a replica of the arketype. On that occasion, He spoke unto all of the Nations in Amharic, even if many of them did not know Amharic language. And He did the same on all the official occasions of his political ministry, as the imperial protocol prescibed to always express first the fullness of the ethiopian dignity in mother tongue, and then to allow a foreign translation.
In the Amharic version of His Majesty’s speech we find the original Tongue of that Word, for His Majesty has originally conceived that thought in Amharic, before speaking in french. And this version is naturally different and more precise than the french one:
ነገር ግን አሳቤን በመንፈሴ ኃይል ሁሉ ከልቤ ለመናገር የሚቻለኝ በአማርኛ ቋንቋ ስለሆነ
Neger Gen Asabien BeMenfesiè Hayl Hulu KeLebiè LeMennager Yemitchallegn Bamarigna Qwanqwa Selehone
“But it is in Amharic language that I am able to speak my thought from my heart with all the power of my spirit.”
But / Neger Gen
it is / Selehone
in Amharic language / BeAmarigna Qwanqwa
that I am able / Yemitchallegn
to speak / LeMennager
my thought / Asabien
from my heart / Kelebiè
with all the power of my spirit / BeMenfesiè Hayl Hullu
Therefore, it is true that we can get biblical spiritual wisdom from any version, nevertheless we need Ethiopian original version and mother tongue, as God has originally thought that word in that tongue, to acquire BIBLICAL SCIENCE and precise full overstanding of its expression. When we have the original and we follow the natural order of manifestation, then we can fully apprecilove and understand even the copy, that can extend our imagination and develop the original insight.
As the King said:
“I would tell a person who was considering the claim of Christ for the first time that it is necessary to have faith in the Almighty, that it is necessary to have love, and that it is necessary to conduct oneself in a manner that we have been taught to do in the Bible. I would also advise him to seek the secular knowledge, for the more one knows the more he realises…”
After the universal necessity to obey the Bible and its fundamental spiritual common meanings, then He advised to acquire knowledge of world and humanity in this time, hence of human languages and historical translations of the Bible, to perfect our spiritual realization. In english we call it Bible like Babel, so we know there’s some linguistic confusion we must purify.
We should follow the divine advice. Too many times the merciful words of His Majesty are quoted to justify ignorance. Let them listen with both their 2 ears and take heed.
Both Bob Marley and Vaughn Benjamin ended to identify with an Ethiopian Name. The prophecy says that we shall speak only one Ethiopian Language at the end, as it was in the beginning before Babylon Tower:
“For then will I turn to the people a pure language, that they may all call upon the name of the LORD, to serve him with one consent. From beyond the rivers of Ethiopia my suppliants, even the daughter of my dispersed, shall bring mine offering.”  (Zephaniah 3,9-10)
And among the Constitutional Laws of the Kingdom of God, we have:
“The official language of the Empire is Amharic” (Art. 125)
Then we will study that language, we will speak that language and will have our own biblical translations from that original language, better than King James’ and Roman Popes. This is a truly royal thing and a fulfillment of His Majesty’s example.

ጥምቀት – Baptism

This artistic work of Selam Semrete Selassie meditates the shape and meanings of the 4 letters of the word Timqet ጥምቀት Baptism, through which we can pictographically visualize its traditional iconography.
Tiet ጥ represents the change and fracture determined by the sacrament of rebirth: it is here associated to the suddenly apparition of the Father from heaven.
Miem ም represents the substance coming over the body, that is both the Holy Spirit (Menfes) and the Water (May); here is the dove descending upon the head of Christ.
Qof ቀ represents the hit of that holy substance upon the head of the baptized one, and his unction.
Taw ት is associated with Krstos and the body of the baptized one that receives the sacrament.
